What is Tolosa-Hunt Syndrome?

Tolosa-Hunt syndrome (THS) is a rare inflammatory disorder characterized by severe headaches, periocular pain, and double vision(WebMD). The disorder is more common after the age of twenty. Patients present with severe retro-orbital or periorbital pain of acute onset. Diplopia related to ophthalmoparesis follows the onset of pain and visual loss can occur. Tolosa-Hunt syndrome is most often unilateral. Painful ophthalmoplegia is the hallmark of this syndrome, and ptosis may be observed related to oculomotor palsy. Mild proptosis and evidence of trigeminal nerve involvement is suggested by loss of the ipsilateral corneal reflex.
