About Us
The Journal of Ophthalmic Medical Technology is a peer reviewed journal that was established to publish articles and presentations dealing with all aspects of ophthalmology with a special emphasis on providing information to ophthalmic medical personnel and to highlight student research from accredited training programs.

The Journal of Ophthalmic Medical Technology receives considerable support from The Harvey and Bernice Jones Eye Institute at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) in Little Rock, Arkansas. The Department of Ophthalmic Technologies at UAMS began this journal to allow its Ophthalmic Medical Technology students a place to submit their research work for publication. The Ophthalmic Medical Technology program is one of just a few accredited programs of its kind in the United States. According to the Committee on Accreditation for Ophthalmic Medical Personnel (CoA-OMP), there are currently:
  • 7 Technologist-level educational programs in the U.S. (plus 2 in Canada).
  • 9 Technician-level educational programs in the U.S. (plus 1 in Puerto Rico)
  • 15 Assistant-level educational programs in the U.S. (plus 1 in Canada, 1 in India, & 1 in Saudi Arabia)
We hope the Journal of Ophthalmic Medical Technology will also serve as a resource and guide for technical personnel seeking certification or advanced certification. According to the Joint Commission on Allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmology (JCAHPO), of the 15,180 certified ophthalmic medical personnel1:
  • 68.9% are Certified Ophthalmic Assistants
  • 26.5% are Certified Ophthalmic Technicians
  • 4.5% are Certified Ophthalmic Medical Technologists
